AEO status is a customs seal of approval for companies involved in international trade. It was introduced as part of the EU Customs Code to promote secure supply chains and reward reliable economic operators with procedural advantages.

An AEO can enjoy various advantages, such as simplified customs procedures, lower inspection rates, or preferential treatment during security checks. The status can be applied for in two variants or in combination:

  • AEO-C (Customs Simplifications): for customs simplifications (e.g., simplified declarations or central customs clearance)
  • AEO-S (Security and Safety): for security aspects along the supply chain

This requires a detailed application and review process by the competent customs office. Among other things, the reliability, solvency, internal control systems, and, if applicable, security standards (e.g., access controls, employee checks) are reviewed.

AEO status is valid throughout the EU and is increasingly recognized internationally, for example under mutual recognition agreements (e.g., with Japan, China, and the US).
